New York companies with more moving parts than people
New York City businesses tend to grow fast and get complicated early. Multiple entities, multiple locations, investors or partners who want reporting, lenders who want packages, and a cost of hiring that makes every in-house finance seat a serious decision. That's the gap River Edge fills.
Our New York City clients are typically owner-led or investor-backed companies with real complexity and a finance function that hasn't kept up:
- Healthcare operators such as home care agencies, ABA and behavioral health providers, clinics, and medical and dental groups, often with several entities or locations.
- Real estate owners, operators and property managers with portfolios spread across the boroughs, multiple LLCs, and partners or lenders who expect property-level reporting.
- MCA funders, syndicators and alternative-finance lenders whose portfolio accounting, syndication splits and borrowing-base reporting need to tie out every month.
- Venture-backed startups from seed to Series B that need investor-grade books, board reporting and runway forecasting without building a finance team.
- Professional services, distribution and other owner-led companies that want a real monthly close and a CFO's view of the business.
Why New York companies outsource the finance function
The reasons we hear from New York owners are remarkably consistent.
The cost of an in-house team adds up fast
A controller, a staff accountant and a part-time CFO, fully loaded with benefits, payroll taxes and office space, is a major fixed cost in this city. Many companies discover they need the skills of all three but the hours of maybe one. Our finance team cost calculator adds up what each in-house role really costs, so you can compare honestly.
One person holds everything
In many growing companies, one bookkeeper or office manager knows how the books work. When that person is out, overloaded or leaves, the close stops. An outsourced team spreads that knowledge across several people and documents it.
The close arrives too late to use
If last month's numbers show up in the middle of this month, or later, decisions about hiring, pricing, inventory and cash are made on instinct. In a fast-moving market, that's expensive.
Lenders, partners and investors want more than a year-end P&L
New York's lenders, landlords, investors and buyers all expect reliable, accrual-basis monthly financials, not a year-end summary. Owners often find out their books aren't ready the moment someone asks for them.
The whole finance function, delivered as one team
River Edge works as your accounting department, from daily transactions to board-level reporting. You can start with the piece you need most and add the rest over time.
Bookkeeping and monthly close
All accounts reconciled, accruals booked and a closed set of books delivered on a fixed date every month. Learn more about bookkeeping.
Accounts payable and receivable
Vendors paid accurately and on time under your approval rules, and customer invoicing and collections tracked so cash comes in when it should. See accounts payable and accounts receivable.
Payroll and benefits coordination
We manage the relationship with your payroll provider, benefits and PTO tracking so every pay run is correct and booked properly. See payroll and benefits.
Controller and fractional CFO
Budgets, forecasts, cash planning, KPI reporting, lender and investor packages, and a CFO who can sit in on the decisions that matter. See fractional CFO / controller.
Transaction support
Preparing for a sale, an acquisition or a recapitalization, including diligence support and a clean financial history. See sell-side and transaction advisory.
Specialists in the sectors New York runs on
Generalist bookkeeping misses the details that matter in specialized industries. Our New York clients come to us because we already know how their businesses work.
Healthcare
Monthly close across multiple entities, payroll broken out by role, receivables tracked by payer, and margin by service line or location. For home care in particular, see our page on home care agency accounting, or our broader healthcare accounting services.
Real estate and property management
Property-level and entity-level books, trust and operating reconciliations, lender packages and investor reporting. Property managers on AppFolio, Yardi or Buildium can read more on our property management accounting page, and owners can see real estate accounting.
MCA and alternative finance
Funded versus collected versus defaults, daily remittance posting, syndication reporting and borrowing-base packages. See MCA accounting and accounting for MCA syndicators.
Startups and venture-backed companies
Accrual-basis books, burn and runway, board packages and audit readiness for seed to Series B companies. See startup accounting and fractional CFO.
A New York-style problem, solved
Alternative-finance lending is one of the most demanding accounting environments in the city: hundreds of moving balances, investors and warehouse lenders who want verifiable reporting, and no tolerance for a slow close.
A loan book reconciled every month, with borrowing-base reporting on schedule
An alternative-finance lender with roughly 180 active loans needed a loan book its warehouse lender could verify. We reconcile the ~180 loans every month and produce the borrowing-base reporting on a fixed monthly schedule.
See all case studies →The same discipline (reconciling every balance every month and delivering reporting on a fixed schedule) is what we bring to every New York client, whatever the industry.
The first 90 days
Changing who keeps your books sounds disruptive. In practice, it's a structured handoff, and most of the work falls on our side.
Weeks 1 to 2: the free review and a plan
We start with a free review of last month's books and walk you through what stands out: what doesn't tie, what's missing and what a lender or investor would ask about. From there we agree on scope and a start date.
Weeks 2 to 6: catch-up and setup
We take over access, document how money moves through the business, bring reconciliations current, and restructure the chart of accounts around how you actually operate: by entity, location, property, payer or product line, whatever matters to your decisions.
Month 2 onward: a monthly rhythm
Books closed on a fixed date, a short reporting package for owners and partners, payables and receivables handled week to week, and a standing CFO conversation once the numbers are reliable enough to plan with.
Ongoing: one team that knows your business
You work with the same CPA-led team each month. They know your vendors, your lenders, your quirks and your history, so questions get answered quickly and nothing restarts from scratch.

Questions owners ask
Do you only work with New York City companies?
No. We have an office in Lower Manhattan and our headquarters on Long Island, but we serve clients nationwide. Most of the work is done remotely, with in-person meetings when they help.
What size companies do you work with?
Typically owner-led and investor-backed companies that have outgrown a part-time bookkeeper but don't yet need a full in-house finance department. Many have several entities, locations or investors to report to.
Can you replace our in-house bookkeeper or work alongside them?
Either. Some clients hand us the whole finance function; others keep an internal bookkeeper and use us for the close, controller review and CFO work. We'll recommend what makes sense after the free review.
Which accounting systems do you work in?
We work in QuickBooks Online, Xero and NetSuite, plus industry platforms such as AppFolio, Yardi and Buildium for property managers. You don't need to change systems to start.
How quickly can you start?
Usually within a couple of weeks of the free review. If the books are behind, we catch up the history while running the current month's close in parallel, so you're not waiting for the cleanup to finish before getting current numbers.
How do we get started?
Request a free review of last month's books using the form on this page. There's no obligation.
See your numbers the way a New York lender would
